The Lough Carra Ambassador Programme

What is the Lough Carra Ambassador Programme?

The Lough Carra Ambassador Programme is part of the “Our Lake, Our Heritage” project, a 12-month initiative, which started in April 2025 aiming to increase the capacity and sustainability of the Lough Carra Catchment Association (LCCA) while creating innovative initiatives aimed at engaging more people in the long-term conservation and enjoyment of the lake.

The “Our Lake, Our Heritage” project has been made possible by generous funding from the Heritage Council, and you can learn more about it here.

One element of the “Our Lake, Our Heritage” project is the Lough Carra Ambassador Programme. The aim of the programme is to;

  • Increase awareness of the importance of our natural, cultural and archaeological heritage, and;
  • Empower ambassadors to be part of our drive for positive change in the conservation of Lough Carra and its surrounding landscape.

Volunteer Ambassadors will be recruited to become key stakeholders, actively involved in learning about the internationally important biodiversity and cultural heritage of Lough Carra, and helping us engage with more people to conserve its unique qualities.

How to become a volunteer Ambassador

Our Ambassador Programme aims to recruit up to 12 volunteer ambassadors. This unique opportunity would suit anyone who has:

  1. An enthusiasm for the natural and/or cultural heritage;
  2. An interest in learning about Lough Carra and the challenges it faces;
  3. The ability to attend meetings, workshops, webinars and engagement events around the Lough Carra area;
  4. Good communication skills and is keen to share their new knowledge with others as part of the LCCA team; and
  5. An enthusiasm for supporting the LCCA and is aged 18 years old or over.

What will Ambassadors do?

Our new Lough Carra Ambassadors will:

  • Attend a series of webinars, workshops and site visits to learn about the natural and cultural heritage of the Lough Carra landscape.
  • Be invited to take part in engagement events and share their learning with others.
  • Be invited to attend bi-monthly meetings held by the LCCA to learn more about the work of the association.
